Local Information
There are excellent fish and vegetable markets in the Venetian town of Zakynthos, plus various restaurants and shops. Closer to home, visit the winery and Byzantine art studio, hire a boat for the day from Nikos, walk the mountains and look over Kefalonia, or visit Kefalonia itself, a short ferry ride away. Visit Shipwreck Bay (voted one of the top beaches in the world by Conde Nast Traveller) or the famous Blue Caves.
Zakynthos is one of the most beautiful of Greek islands. Homer wrote about it in the Iliad and the Odyssey, while Ulysses lived here. The Arcadians came and flourished, reaping crops from its rich fertile soil as did the Venetians who called it “The Flower of the Levant”. Some of their monasteries still survive in the nearby mountains. The sea around the coast is clean and crystal clear, turtles can be spotted swimming nearby and the local restaurant cooks octopus pulled from the water that morning. The island produces wonderful olive oil, fruit (oranges, apricots, pomegranates, figs, apples, pears, lemons, peaches, nectarines to name a few), poultry and meat. There are several friendly tavernas, plate smashing included!
